NHU Applies for Stimulus Funding
The federal stimulus bill, formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was signed into law on February 17, 2009. This bill provides financial assistance for drinking water and wastewater State Revolving Funds.
When news of a potential stimulus bill began to circulate late last year, New Holstein Utilities (NHU) was contacted by the city's engineering firm, Robert E. Lee & Associates of Green Bay, to discuss our interest in applying for funding. With the assistance of the engineering firm, preliminary paperwork was filed on behalf of NHU of interest in receiving some funds.
There are various locations throughout the City of New Holstein where water and wastewater infrastructure improvements can be completed. However, due to the number of projects completed over the past several years, NHU management and the utility commission made the decision not to budget any water or wastewater infrastructure improvement projects for 2009. If NHU were to be offered financial assitance from the stimulus bill, we would complete some infrastructure projects.
At this time state officials are trying to determine how to administer the funds. Once a number of policy issues are resolved, a program will be designed to distribute the funds. As you might imagine, there is plenty of competition for funds. We will keep our customers informed if NHU is awarded any of the stimulus funds.
