Four Steps To A Greener Lawn

You may think that lawn mowing is nothing more than a nuisance, but itís actually a serious environmental threat. It guzzles gas, emits carbon dioxide, and soaks up our water supply. So how do you go low-impact?

Here are four ways to get started:

  • Invest in a manual push mower. Todayís push mowers are a breeze to operate, require less maintenance than older models, provide a better cut, and use no gas or electricity.
  • Reduce lawn size by sectioning off an area of your yard for native plants. Their deep root systems keep water in the soil, cutting back on water time. Plus, they donít need to be mowed.
  • Keep your lawn taller. Allow your lawn to grow 3 to 3 Ĺ inches tall. A taller lawn encourages deeper root growth and shades the soil from moisture loss.
  • Collect rainwater. Buy or make your own rain barrel. Use the water you collect to nourish your lawn
