Water Meter Tests and Cross Connection Surveys are being Conducted
Per Wisconsin Administrative Code, municipal water utilities are required to test water meters at least every ten years and must survey all water customer's plumbing to protect the municipality's water system from the possibility of contamination due to backflow.
Each water meter is tested under specific standards set forth in the Wisconsin Administrative Code. The meter tests are conducted under a minimum test flow and a normal test flow. Water meters that do not meet the standard or have been installed over 20 years are replaced.
A water cross connection survey is completed to ensure contaminated water can not backflow into the municipal water system. Backflow is defined as when water in a hose or pipe reverses it proper or intended direction of flow. If a cross connection(s) is identified at your home or business you will be required to have a backflow preventer(s) installed. These devices can be purchased from most hardware stores, home improvement centers or plumbing contractors.
A NHU Water Department employee may be contacting you to schedule an appointment to conduct the meter test and cross connection survey. These appointments are scheduled during NHU's business hours from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. If you have any questions regarding the meter testing procedure or cross connection survey please contact our office.
