Good For the Community in More Ways Than One!
The name New Holstein Utilities (NHU) is synonymous with low rates, fast response times, and high customer service. NHU customers enjoy electric, water, wastewater and water softener rates that are among the lowest in the area. But utility service isn't the only thing NHU does well.
Since 2002, NHU has conducted a food drive in conjunction with Public Power Week, a nationally recoginized event that brings attention to the importance and benefit of municipally-owned electric systems.
Usually only one week in length, NHU extended Public Power Week for an extra week in order to allow for increased food collections. The food drive is the brain child of NHU Office Manager, Paula Pethan, who is no stranger to community involvement in New Holstein. Local elementary school students who donate non-perishable food and household supplies are entered into a drawing for prizes. This year, customers who brought in a food or supply item were given a 23-watt compact fluorescent light bulb.
The following students won a prize from the drawing for contributing to the food drive: Ashley Gulig, Alex Kaiser, Mollie Meyer, Hattie Winkel, Jon Heus, Rachel Schmitz, Jacob Woelfel, Gregory Parker, Colby Patten, Becca Sippel, Skyler Feuerstein, Bianca Bonde, Michael Pasineau, and Amanda Sabel.
During the 2005 Public Power Week(s), NHU collected 868 food and sundry items, bringing the total item count for the four years the collection has taken place to 3,378 items. The donations are picked up by members of the local St. Vincent DePaul society. The generous donations to the food pantry are greatly appreciated. Thank you to our customers, the schools, and the students and their families for partnering with us to make this such a successful event!
Also during Public Power Week, an Energy Star rated appliance is given away through a drawing. All NHU customers are eligible to register for the drawing. Kenn Oie won an Energy Star rated dehumidifier in this year's drawing. Thanks to all of our customers who participated in the Public Power Week celebration this year!
